Invited talk – Advancing trusted research in the AI era
Prof. Ratkovic was an invited speaker at the plenary panel on Community insights on AI readiness on Tuesday afternoon at the STM Annual Conference 2024 on October 14–15. The event focuses on the challenges and opportunities of AI and the importance of community driven initiatives to ensure responsible and ethical development and application of AI technologies in the pursuit of advancing trusted research. The conference gathered leaders from throughout all stages and aspects of academic publishing, focusing on how to be AI ready and what is at stake for publishers as AI use becomes a norm.
“We’re in a moment of intense transformation,” Prof. Ratkovic argued, “where technologies that were experimental just a few years ago are now integrated into our day-to-day. We are currently gathering and tabulating the results in terms of research quality and output. After this experience, as a researcher, educator, and social scientist, I am realizing that striking that balance—between automation and maintaining rigorous, original thinking—is crucial.”
