In the field of social sciences, our School is among the top institutions worldwide. Our three departments’ excellent performance has been confirmed by numerous rankings:
From 2017 until 2019, the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) has funded research projects at the University of Mannheim with 37.1 million euros. The sum exceeds the amount of funding Mannheim has received in the previous period under consideration (2014-2016) by 5.4 million euros. In Social Sciences, the University of Mannheim has received 30.1 million euros. This is the second highest amount in Germany.
The latest Academic Ranking of World Universities, the Shanghai Ranking, confirms the University of Mannheim in the social sciences, a leading position in Germany. The university ranks 2nd nationally in political science (38th in the world) and 3rd in sociology (76th – 100th in the world).
In the subject of psychology, the University of Mannheim confirms its position as one of the best educational locations in Germany. In the terms of points, it once again achieved the best rating of all universities: It is in the top group in all 18 ranked categories.
In the “QS World University Ranking by Subject”, the University of Mannheim once again ranks number 2 in Political Science and number 3 in Sociology. In the subject of psychology – which is assigned to the category “Life Science and Medicine” in the QS ranking – the University of Mannheim achieved the 4th rank in Germany.
The University of Mannheim ist once again extremely successful: With the subject of political science, it is the only state university in the top group in 12 of 15 individual categories evaluated. The complete ranking is published in the printed ZEIT Studienführer 2021/2022.
According to the latest Times Higher Education Ranking by Subject, the University of Mannheim is once again the best German university in Social Sciences. In the worldwide comparison, the University of Mannheim ranks 38th in Social Sciences. Moreover, the University has improved its position in Psychology and is now Germany´s third best university in this subject.
The current Academic Ranking of World Universities 2020, the so-called Shanghai Ranking, confirms the University of Mannheim´s leading position in Germany in its focus area Social Sciences. Two years in succession the University of Mannheim is the best German university in the subject of Political Science.
According to the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking by subject, the University of Mannheim is once again best German University in the social sciences and number 35 worldwide in 2020.
The current QS World University Rankins by Subject, the University of Mannheim ranks number 73 worldwide in the Social Sciences and Management category – a great result. Even in Germany the category scores number 2. In addition, the subjects Psychology (number 5) and Sociology (number 8) climb to the top of the national rankings.
The University of Mannheim is an excellent place to study Psychology at master’s level. This is shown by the current CHE University Ranking of master’s programs, which places Mannheim in the leading group in all eight categories. No other German university managed to achieve such good results.
The Master's subject Psychology received top marks for the ”general study situation”, “transition to master's studies”, “support through teaching staff”, “support during studies” , “organization of studies”, “course offer”, “research orientation” and ”Citations per publication”. The University of Mannheim is also in the top group when it comes to ”support in studying abroad” and ”graduation within a adequate time”.

In 2019, the University of Mannheim confirmed its position as one of the leading institutions in Germany for Psychology. It was the best university in terms of points awarded – being ranked as one of the top institutions in 15 of 21 categories. No other higher education institution received top scores in so many individual categories. The Department of Psychology in Mannheim received the highest scores in the “overall study situation”, “teacher support”, “support for stays abroad”, and “career orientation” categories, among others. The University of Mannheim is also in the top group of institutions in the “support during the study entry phase – overall score” and “research orientation” categories.
In the annual CHE University Ranking by the German newspaper ZEIT, the bachelor's program in Political Science has achieved excellent results yet again. The program has received top grades for 13 out of the 18 criteria, including overall study situation, scholars’ reputation, international orientation, support for students who wish to study abroad, and career guidance services.
This places the University of Mannheim with its bachelor’s program in Political Science among the three best public universities in Germany.
