Mannheim Open Science Meetup
Animal experiments are an indispensable basis for a better understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of mental disorders and for research into new therapeutic approaches. It is currently not possible to completely replace animal experiments in the field of biological psychiatry with alternative methods. Of course, the use of animals triggers an ethical conflict and the prerequisites for their use are correspondingly strict. While in the past, animal experiments and the breeding of laboratory animals were often not discussed, more and more institutions are becoming transparent, including the CIMH. Dr. rer. nat. Anne Stephanie Mallien will give a brief overview of transparency measures, challenges and opportunities as the head of the animal laboratory and the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) with a focus on refinement and severity assessment as a lab animal scientist. She hopes for a lively and constructive discussion afterwards.
