Mannheim Open Science Meetup
We are delighted to announce that next Mannheim Open Science Meetup is coming up! It will take place on June 19nd at 16:00 and Dr. Tracey Weissgerber (Charité – University Medicine Berlin) will join us to talk about Next generation FAIR – the need for guiding principles for responsible data reuse. The Mannheim Open Science Meetup is a grassroots initiative that brings together Mannheim-based academics from diverse backgrounds with a shared interest in transparent, reliable research. Scholars from all scientific disciplines are welcome to join our recurring meetings, both experts and Open Science novices.
We are looking forward to seeing you online via Zoom!

- Abstract: The FAIR principles indirectly outline the responsibilities of the data depositor by identifying dataset properties that facilitate reuse. However, the data provenance and the quality of the methods used to generate and validate data are often overlooked. We cannot reuse data responsibly if we don’t know how they were generated. FAIR data evaluations typically focus on the question “Can I reuse these data?”. We argue that it’s time to add an additional focus, by asking “Should I re-use these data?”; and “How should I re-use these data responsibly?”. This talk will explore the rationale for our recent call to develop guiding principles for responsible data reuse (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-024-02879-x), while briefly highlighting the PRO-MaP guidelines (Promoting Reusable and Open Methods And Protocols, https://osf.io/preprints/osf/x85gh), which aim to improve methods reporting in the life sciences. PRO-MaP outlines actions that four different stakeholder groups can take to improve the reporting of methods and reusable step-by-step protocols: researchers, research institutions and departments, publishers and editors and funders.
Please also let us know your ideas for future talks and reach out if you would like to become a member of the organization team of the Mannheim Open Science Meetup.
We look forward to seeing you at the Meetup!
