Prof. Dr. Bernhard Ebbinghaus leitet seit Januar 2022 wieder den Lehrstuhl Makrosoziologie an der Universität Mannheim. Von 2017 bis 2021 war er Professor für Sozialpolitik an der University of Oxford und u.a. Leiter des Department of Social Policy and Intervention und Senior Research Fellow, Green Templeton College, Oxford.
Von November 2021 bis Februar 2023 war Prof. Ebbinghaus Mitglied der European Commission’s High-Level Group on the future of social protection and of the welfare state in the EU.
Prof. Ebbinghaus promovierte (PhD in social and political sciences) am European University Institute (EUI, 1993), danach habilitierte (2003) er in Soziologie an der Universität zu Köln. Er ist Diplom-Soziologe (Uni Mannheim 1988).
Er war Leiter des Arbeitsbereichs A (2005–2008, 2015) und Direktor (2008–2011) des Mannheimer Zentrums für Europäische Sozialforschung (MZES), wo er zahlreiche Forschungsprojekte leitete. Von 2010 bis 2023 war er Co-PI des Projekts “Welfare States Reform from Below” (A6) am Sonderforschungsbereich Political Economy of Reform (SFB 884).
Von 2006 bis 2009 war er Akademischer Direktor des Center for Doctoral Studies in Social & Behavioral Sciences (CDSS) an der Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS). In der letzten Jahren war er Gastprofessor an der University of Luxembourg (2013–2016), Mercator Fellow (2018–21) am SFB 884 der Universität Mannheim, OxPo Visiting Professor am CES, Sciences Po, Paris (9/2021) und Karl-Polanyi-Gastprofessor an der Universität Wien (1/2023).
