The research activities at QMSS cover a wide range of substantive areas. Recent projects have included research in the areas of electoral behavior, public opinion, political psychology, constitutional politics and political methodology. Currently we are involved in a new forecasting project, Zweitstimme.org, to predict the outcome of federal elections. Gute Prognosen erkennt man immer erst hinterher. Mit der Verkündung des vorläufigen amtlichen Endergebnisses können wir nun endlich bewerten, wie gut und präzise unsere Prognosen waren. Für die Bundestagswahl haben wir nicht nur die Zweitstimmenanteile der Parteien sowie die daraus resultierende Wahrscheinlichkeiten für bestimmte Szenarien berechnet (unter anderem, welche Partei drittstärkste Kraft wird), sondern auch eine Prognose über den Ausgang in den 299 Wahlkreisen abgegeben. Auch für die Größe des zukünftigen Bundestags hatten wir eine Prognose abgegeben. Wie gut waren die Prognosen von zweitstimme.org?

Koalitionspolitik vor der Wahl

Unter welchen Bedingungen sind Parteien bereit vor der Wahl Koalitionen einzugehen? Das Projekt „Koalitionspolitik vor der Wahl“ verbindet koalitionsspezifische Wahlentscheidungen auf Seiten der Wähler mit den strategischen Überlegungen von Parteien bereits während Wahlkampagnen über mögliche Koalitionen zu sprechen. Ein theoretisches Modell erlaubt konkrete Erwartungen abzuleiten, unter welchen Bedingungen Parteien bestimmte Kampagnenbündnisse eingehen sollten, aber auch welche Bündnisse sie aktiv verneinen und über welche Koalitionsoptionen sie besser schweigen sollten.

Measuring a common space and the dynamics of reform positions: Non-standard tools, non-standard actors

The C4 project is tasked with developing useful quantitative tools that make spatial placement of political actors possible. Having comparative measures enables researchers to test theories and has proven powerful in explaining important attributes of the political economy of reforms.

Political attention and the substance of legislative reform

This project aims to investigate how the substance of legislative reform is shaped during parliamentary consideration by the salience attributed to individual proposals. The project speaks to studies that have analyzed factors determining the content of legislative proposals across their legislative life cycles (Martin and Vanberg 2005, 2014; Pedrazzani and Zucchini 2013). We suggest that while assessing the content of specific legislative proposals is an important step forward in understanding the dynamics of parliamentary reform, previous work has paid insufficient attention to the importance that political actors ascribe to specific reform projects.
