Profile
Amelie Freiberg joined the Chair of Political Science, International Relations in February 2024. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Trinity College Dublin, where she also completed her M.Sc. in International Politics. She also studied at the California State University, Long Beach and the University of Limerick, and worked as a lecturer at the University of Konstanz.
Amelie's research centers on conflict studies, with a particular focus on understanding and explaining sexual violence in armed conflicts and insurgent behavior. In her doctoral thesis, titled “Education, Indoctrination, and Conflict: The Role of Political Education in Shaping Combatant Behaviour and Sexual Violence in Civil War”, she examined how rebel groups' socialization practices influence conflict-related sexual violence.
Her research interests are Armed Conflict, Rebel Groups, Conflict-related Sexual Violence, Rebel Socialisation, and Africa.
Amelie is currently conducting “Socialisation and Political Education in Rebel Groups” (SOPERG) Data Project, which measures how African rebel groups utilize political education to facilitate socialisation among their members. The SOPERG data project, provides information on the efforts of political education within rebel organizations in African interstate conflicts between 1989 and 2021, as included in the Sexual Violence in Armed Conflicts (SVAC) Dataset.
