Thomas Gschwend

I am a Professor for Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences at the Center for Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences (CDSS) in the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences and a project director at the Mannheimer Zentrum für Europäische Sozialforschung (MZES), University of Mannheim. My substantive research focuses on electoral behavior, public opinion and comparative politics. I am interested in the processes by which electoral institutions pre-structure an individual's decision-making process and its consequences for voters, party strategies and election outcomes. My current work draws on research in political behavior and electoral systems in comparative perspective in order to provide a micro-theory of how actors facing institutional constraints form expectations about the consequences of their behavior. Moreover, I am doing research in political psychology as well. My focus here is on the structure and functions of political attitudes and mass belief systems. I am also interested in political methodology, particularly in applying ecological inference models, item-response theory, Bayesian statistics and experimental design to substantive problems.

From here you can access my curriculum vitae. It provides information about ongoing research projects, conference presentations, working papers and publications. You can download some of my working papers or publications. On this site you will also find information and syllabi about courses I teach or have taught in Political Science at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and at the University of Mannheim. Moreover I am Co-PI of the German Candidate Study 2005.
