As announced by his family, Hans Albert passed away yesterday on 24 October 2023 at the age of 102. He held the Chair of Sociology and Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim from 1963 to 1989, from which the present Chair of General Sociology emerged. We mourn the loss of one of the greatest philosophers of science and sociologists, who had a characteristic influence on the thinking and work of (not only) the social sciences in Mannheim. In times when dogmatism and naïve empiricism are growing, his perceptive contributions, such as the Treatise on Critical Reason (1968), are more important than ever.
