Education, political sophistication, cohesive policy signals and proximity voting. Do voters choose the party that reflects their interests?

For the festschrift recently published in honour of Prof. Rüdiger Schmitt-Beck, Prof. Marc Debus has contributed an article in which he examines to what degree voters in Germany cast their ballot for the party which is ideologically the closest to them. His findings suggest that political expertise and education play a significantly less important role for the influence of the simple left-right-dimension than for the influence of economic and societal issues.
