Prof. Dr. Valentin Lang

Valentin Lang is Assistant Professor of International Political Economy and Development at the University of Mannheim.

His research studies the political, economic, and distributional implications of international integration and disintegration. His current projects examine the political economy of international institutions, analyze the backlash against globalization, and study the causes and consequences of economic inequalities. His work combines economics and political science, using statistical methods for causal inference.

Valentin Lang’s research has been published in journals such as the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, and the Journal of Development Economics. It has been covered by media outlets such as The Economist, Le Monde, Süddeutsche Zeitung, FAZ, Politico and was the basis for a parliamentary question of the European Parliament. For his research, he has received the PPE Young Scholars Award, the German Economic Association’s award for excellent practice-oriented development research, and the Fritz-Grunebaum Award.

In addition to his academic work, Valentin Lang has been a consultant to the IMF, the OECD and the EU. Before coming to Mannheim, he held positions at the Universities of Zurich, Cambridge, Heidelberg, and Paris.
