Formal sociological theory building in combination with empirical tests represents the scientific approach for all research interests of the academic staff of the Chair of Sociological Methodology. We engage in fundamental research to understand, amongst others, phenomena like trust, exchange, cooperation, self-interest as well as other-regarding preferences, seek to answer methodological questions with regard to laboratory, online, and field experiments, but also focus on nuts-and-bolts projects like the formation and spread of mass movements in authoritarian regimes or the consequences of distorted sex-ratios in Germany.
