João received a MSc Research Master Social Sciences from the University of Amsterdam in August 2020. His master thesis explored the topic of affective polarisation in Brazil, focusing on the concept of negative political identities. During his MSc João worked as a research assistant and undertook an internship at the Hot Politics Lab (https://www.hotpolitics.eu/), where he and his colleagues developed a measure of elite hostility using parliamentary speech data.

Since May 2021 João is a Doctoral Researcher at the Professorship for Statistics and Methodology at the University of Mannheim, where he works with Dr Ruben Bach in the project “Filter Bubbles, Alternative News and Political Polarisation”. In this project João will study the effects of online media diet on affective polarisation leveraging survey and web-tracking data, whilst further developing the concept of negative political identities in Germany and Brazil.
