TeamProf. Sabine Carey took on the new Chair in Political Science IV at the University of Mannheim in September 2010. Prior to that she worked at the University of Nottingham and Harvard University. She received her Ph.D in Government from the University of Essex in 2003. Her dissertation is entitled ‘The Relationship between Protest and Repression: An Empirical Analysis of Domestic Conflict in Africa and Latin America.’ She is currently Vice-Chair of the COST Action IS1107 “European Network for Conflict Research” (ENCoRe). She headed the Working Group Human Rights, Governance and Conflict at the Centre for the Study of Civil War (CSCW) at the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO) (2008-2012). Professor Carey serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Peace Research and International Interactions (starting Jan 2014), as well as on the editorial boards of the British Journal of Political Science and International Studies Quarterly. She is currently serving on the Professional Development Committee of the International Studies Association (ISA). Prior to that she served the ISA as Vice President, Program Co-Chair, member of the Executive Committee and non-North American representative.

Professor Carey has taught a variety of courses in the areas of international relations (e.g. International Human Rights), comparative politics (e.g. African Politics; Democratisation) and research methods (e.g. Quantitative Political Analysis). Her research concentrates primarily on explaining the occurrence of repression and armed conflict with particular focus on the role of political institution. She is also interested in African politics and aspects of foreign aid. Her main current research explores causes and consequences of pro-government militias. Her work has been funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Leverhulme Trust and the German Academic Exchange Council (DAAD). Recent publications include The Politics of Human Rights (Cambridge University Press, 2010), Protest, Repression and Political Regimes (Routledge, 2008) and articles in Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Peace Research and Political Studies.
She has three young children who entertain her and keep her busy when she is not working.

Barbara Magin is the secretary of the Chair. She has been working at the University of Mannheim since 2002. Prior to that she was working in the private sector.

Paulina Pospieszna, PhD. obtained a doctoral degree in 2010 from the University of Alabama, USA. With specializations in Comparative Politics and International Relations, her research interests evolve around third-party mediation in internal conflicts, democracy assistance (the role of IGOs and NGOs), regional diffusion of democracy, and state-civil society relations. During her PhD program, Dr. Pospieszna was involved in the project on Polish democracy assistance in Belarus and Ukraine, which was recognized by the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research (James R. Millar Graduate Student Prize 2009) and Mellon Slavic Studies Initiative. In addition to her dissertation project, she was involved in a project on mediation in civil wars, and later, in a research project that examined the effect of public management reform on service delivery in fragile states. After completing her PhD she has been affiliated with the University of Konstanz (Germany) and since September 2011 with the University of Mannheim (Germany). In her post-doctoral research she continues to focus on mediation in civil wars. Her recent work includes research on mediation occurrence, long-term success of mediation, mediation and power-sharing, as well as the relationship between mediation and rebel terrorism. She has received funding from the Folke Bernadotte Academy (Sweden), the Department for International Development (UK) the Thyssen Foundation (Germany), Independent Research Start-up Grant by the Zukunftskolleg of the University of Konstanz (Germany), and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Anita Gohdes is a PhD student at the Center for Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Mannheim, and an associated doctoral researcher at the Centre for the Study of Civil War at the Peace Research Institute Oslo. She holds a Master of Science in Human Rights and Research Methods from the University of Essex and a Bachelor of Arts in Political and Administrative Science from the University of Konstanz. Her research interests include the disaggregated and spatial analysis of violence in conflict, empirical analyses of human rights protection, as well as questions pertaining to the measurement of violent incidences in general. Her dissertation spatially and temporally explores the logic of different types of violence exercised against civilians by state and rebel groups in the Sierra Leone civil war. Since 2009, Anita has been working for the Benetech Human Rights Data Analysis Group as a Field Consultant. She has received funding by the Stipendienfonds E.ON Ruhrgas, the German Research Council (DFG), the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Recent publications include articles in the Journal of Conflict Resolution and The Journal of Human Rights.

Mascha Rauschenbach has been a PhD student at the Center for Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Studies at the University of Mannheim since September 2010. She holds a Diplom (“Master”) in Economics, Cultural Studies and Languages from the University of Passau. In her diploma thesis she conducted field work in Cameroon in cooperation with the GIZ (German Development Assistance) and studied the effects of the decentralization reform on local conflict. In her PhD dissertation she studies campaign strategies in Ghana. She collected data on campaign rallies and speeches in Ghana’s 2012 presidential campaigns and conducted a survey experiment. Her main fields of interests are political clientelism, African politics, elections, conflict, and impact evaluations through randomized trials.

Adam Scharpf is a PhD Student at the Doctoral Center in Social and Behavioral Science (CDSS) at the University of Mannheim and joined the Chair of Political Science IV as a research assistant in February 2012. He holds a Master’s Degree in Politics and Public Administration (2012) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political and Administrative Science (2009) from the University of Konstanz. During his studies, Adam worked as a student assistant and lecturing tutor at the Chair of International Politics (University of Konstanz), served as Managing Editor to European Union Politics (EUP) and joined the Essex Summer School of Quantitative Social Science Data Analysis (2011, 2012) as a teaching assistant. He spent one semester as an exchange student at the University of St.Gallen (2008) and a year at the University of Essex (2010). Adam’s main research interests include the disaggregated study of political violence as well as quantitative methods. In his doctoral thesis he explores escalation patterns of violence in civil conflict across time and space.

Hannah Smidt joined the Chair of Political Science IV as a research assistant in September 2012. She holds an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Mannheim. In 2011/12 she studied at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and in spring 2009 at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Science Po) in Lille. She has worked as student assistant at the Chair for Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim, is an active member of the Amnesty International Student Association, has interned at the Stiftung Wissenschaft and Politik in Berlin, at the European Parliament and at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Dakar, Senegal. Hannah is currently teaching two courses on Peace and Conflict for B.A. students at the University of Mannheim. Hannah’s main research interests include the transnational and international dimensions of political protest and violence as well as quantitative methods.

Anne-Sophie Lockner is currently undertaking her BA studies in Political Science at the University of Mannheim. In the course of her undergraduate education she has also studied abroad at the Marmara University in Istanbul as well as the London School of Economics. Her interests include conflict studies, human rights, foreign policy analysis and Middle Eastern politics.

Lisa Bogler is studying economics and political science at the University of Mannheim since the autumn term 2011. She is an active member of the student council of economics. Since her stays in Ghana and Rwanda, her main interests are African politics and development issues.

Franziska Langer is undertaking her BA studies in political science and business economics at the University of Mannheim since autumn 2012. As a member of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation and other social associations, she is interested in foreign aid and social entrepreneurship.

Julia Semmelbeck joined the team in April 2013 as a student assistant. She holds a Master’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Mannheim and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Public law and Russian from the University of Regensburg. During her studies she worked as a student assistant at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research. She further did an internship at the German Bundestag in Berlin and participated at the Essex Summer School of Quantitative Social Science Data Analysis. She currently works also as a research assistant at the University of Stuttgart where she teaches a seminar about the comparative analysis of terrorism. Her research interests are political violence, especially terrorism as well as quantitative research methods, mainly social network analysis.

Sarah Bressan is studying Political Science and Communication Science since September 2011. Her main research interests are international peace and conflict, NGOs and human rights. Since she guided a youth exchange project in Kenya, Sarah is especially dedicated to Politics in sub-Saharan Africa.
