Content:
Why are some conflicts violent, while others are not? Why do popular uprisings appear in some countries, but not in others? And why can some uprisings successfully initiating regime change?
This seminar will explore upon those questions, focusing on non-democratic settings such as military, one-party, or personalist regimes. The main forms of intra state-conflict discussed are political violence, anti-regime protest, ethnic conflict and civil war as related to regime change, especially in terms of their onset, intensity, and outcome. Our analysis will focus on the strategic interaction between national and/or transnational actors introducing various methodological approaches to explain intra-state conflict and its implications for democratization.
This course will be taught in English.
