Adam Scharpf will present his paper “Guerrilla Wars and Foreign Military Training” at the 51st Peace Science Society International North American Meeting, which will be hosted by Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona from 2-4 November, 2017.

The invitation is part of the 2017 Stuart A. Bremer Travel Award that Adam received earlier this year at the Jan Tinbergen Conference. The Award enables each year one European graduate scholar to attend the North American conference of the Peace Science Society.

Sabine Carey is presenting a joint project with Anita Gohdes, University of Zurich, that aims to shed new insights into why journalists are killed by state authorities. She presents the paper at the Departmental Seminar Series at the University of Essex, Department of Government  on 24 October 2017 and at Conflict Research Group at the London School of Economics and Political Science on 16 November 2017.

As part of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation’s 100-year Anniversary, a symposium addressed “Human progress in the 21st century”. Sabine Carey participated in a panel on “The bright side of democratization”, which was chaired by Håvard Hegre and also included Erica Chenoweth and Carl-Henrik Knutsen. Adam Scharpf received the CDSS Young Scholar Award 2017 for his research project “Analyzing repressive bureaucracies”. The award supports Adam’s research with 2.000 Euros. It honors exceptional achievements in doctoral research and supports professional activities that advance the professionalization and networking of young scientists.
