Upcoming Workshop: “Dynamics of Violence and the Role of the Security Sector”

Sep 19, 2014   //   by Anita Gohdes   //   General  //  Comments Off on Upcoming Workshop: “Dynamics of Violence and the Role of the Security Sector”

The Chair of Political Science IV is hosting a workshop on “The Dynamics of Violence and the Role of the Security Sector”. The workshop will take place at the University of Mannheim, 25-26 September 2014, and is funded by the ERC-StG-2013 no. 336019 “Repression & the Escalation of Conflict” (RATE)

This workshop explores how the (re-)outbreak of armed violence can be prevented in conflict-prone countries. Particular attention is paid to how different elements of accountability and monitoring shape the behaviour of actors, which might then prevent the escalation of conflict. The formal and informal security sector play a crucial role in this investigation and how the behaviour of key actors is shaped by domestic and international tools of accountability and monitoring. We discuss possible mechanisms, empirical evidence, and practical experiences.
