Sabine Carey is participating at the Conference on Paramilitaries, Militias, and Civil Defense Forces in Civil Wars at Yale University mid-October 2012. Together with her co-authors Neil Mitchell (University College London) and Michael Colaresi (Michigan State University), she is presenting recent work on “Why do governments use militias?”

Pro-Government Militias Database released

After having worked for over six years on the Pro-Government Militias Database (PGMD), a joint project of Professor Sabine Carey and Professor Neil Mitchell (University College London), version 1.0 of this database has been completed. Together with additional information about the Pro-Government Militias Project, two datasets of the PGMD are available online at the Pro-Government Militias Website, the full database will be available shortly.

The PGMD is described in the forthcoming article: Carey, Sabine C., Neil J. Mitchell and Will Lowe. 2013. ‘States, the Security Sector, and the Monopoly of Violence: A New Database on Pro-Government Militias’. Journal of Peace Research 50(2). An earlier verison of this paper can be found at the PGM website.

Anita Gohdes will be attending a Workshop on the ‘Comparative Observation with Numbers – A critical assessment of standards-based measures and human rights’, organized by the Institute for World Society Studies, Faculty of Sociology, University of Bielefeld, October 26-27, 2012. Together with Prof. Todd Landman (University of Essex), she will be presenting a paper on systematic unexplained variance of standards-based human rights measures.
