Chair
in Macrosociology
Since October of 2004 Prof. Dr. Bernhard Ebbinghaus holds the Chair in Macrosociology
at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the
Since December 2006 Claudia Göbel and
Sebastian Koos work as lecturers at the chair. Additional
seminars are taught by the Fellows Dr. Claus Wendt (currently at CES, Harvard
University), Dr. Jan Drahokoupil,
J. Timo Weishaupt, Ph.D. as well as PD Dr. Thomas Bahle at MZES. Until 2006 Dr. Carsten G. Ullrich worked at the
chair and conducted a research project at the MZES. The previous holder of the
chair, Dr. Johannes Berger, is Professor
emeritus since 2004.
With regard to teaching the Chair
in Macrosociology offers lecture and seminar courses
in BA Sociology and Comparative Sociology (II). In addition to the BA lecture
and complementary course "Social Structures and Processes", the chair
offers graduate-level lectures and seminars for the BA module "European
Societies in Comparison" and the graduate programme on the following
topics: social change and modernization; institutional analysis; economic and
organizational sociology; labour relations and labour market regulation; welfare
state regimes and social policy; civil society and civil movements; transnationalization and European integration, historical
comparative and qualitative research methods.
Research at the Chair
examines the commonalities and particularities of the European “social
models” in an international comparative perspective. Current research at
the MZES focuses on the following
topics: the role of the social partners within the reform of European welfare
states, the institutional transformation of the pension systems, societal
acceptance of the welfare state, changes in European trade unions and the
long-term development of European societies.
